Type EXperiments

Alongside elongating and repeating characters, the act of destroying them was imperative to the the my project inspired by my stammer. In accordance to how I, and other stammerers, visualise the impediment, a method of merging and destroying characters ultimately questions the relationship between shape and sound — the way in which we read letters for their shape which is ultimately converted into sound both externally in the environment and inside our own minds.

The resulting motifs take the form of ligatures. Typographically, legibility is sacrificed to make way for a more expressive outcome that aims to visualise the rawness of stammering sounds. The act of cutting the paper, and retaining these cuts in the scans only aims to further express the rough and sometimes uneasy nature of the uncomfortable sounds produced by a stammer.
